Six years ago I completed my Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, Integrating the arts across the Curriculum, from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA. Arts integration is my passion and I try to teach other teachers about it whenever I have the chance. I was asked to present at the Create Tennessee 2014 conference in Knoxville this summer. My session was an hour and a half workshop entitled Connect the Dots in Middle Grades, Arts Integration in Connections. I am including the link to the program with my class description and Bio.

At the beginning of the year, I was asked to do a workshop for all of our teachers about Arts Integration. We had a blast! Following is a video I created for this workshop as well as a hand-out I distributed to both my Create and WJMS classes.
A couple years later, I presented at the Tennessee Arts Commission Summer Workshop again. This time, the presentation was on creating Eric Carle type collage books to use in Science. This was basicallly having the education professionals go through the process we did at school (see below).

6th Grade LA
At school, I try to be a resource for teachers if they want to try some Arts Integrated Lessons. Following are lessons I worked up for teachers in other disciplines to use with their classes as they requested from me.
6th Grade Language Arts - We made paper mache masks. The students each wrote a monologue from the point of view of a character in a book they were presenting. The mask also represented that character. For the book report, each child presented his/her monologue using his/her mask.
7th Grade Science
Children's books on Biomes with Eric Carle Collage Illustrations. We showed the kids a powerpoint about Eric Carle and talked about how he made his illustrations. The kids then had to choose a biome and write a story ( informational or children's), then illustrate it with collages. The students made the texture paper for the collages using crayon rubbings.

7th grade Steam Team
For the past two years, I have worked with the Steam team to compose original sound symphonies to use as the dinner music for their fall mystery event night. We start with a lesson on John Page and experimental music. They are instructed to go find some interesting sounds and they
n each group works together to create the most interesting way to put their sounds together into an original composition. They draw or graph out the form and then practice, tweaking, until they are ready to record. After all groups are finished, on of the kids puts them all together digitally to create a class soundtrack. The experience is fun and rewarding as the kids become composers, directors, performers, editors and audience!
