2016-2017 A year to remember!
There are 270 beautiful chorus students involved in the WJMS Panther Chorus this year, an all time high number of singers! We started the year preparing for our fall Peace Concert. Our chorus shirts reflect our theme of Peace, Love, Chorus. The concert, held in October was a beautiful show which centered around songs about peace, understanding and acceptance. The kids made paper quilts to display at the concert, wrote original stories and poetry about the world they wanted to grow up in and poems based on the poem "Where I'm From". We used the poetry as well as some poetry by Mya Angelou to tie together this moving and beautiful concert. The kids sounded great!
In October, I found out that I received a Jackson EMC Bright Ideas Grant! I was surprised by my Principal, Assistant Principals and some of the folks from Jackson EMC who came in my room with flowers, balloons a HUGE check and...a photographer! I also went to the board meeting a couple weeks later to talk about my project, "The Stories We Sing, American Folk Songs". We had a blast attending district honor chorus at the end of October.
November saw our performance at the Annual Veteran's Day Celebration. In December, we had a beautiful concert then went on some really fun field trips! The 6th grade sang for the local Senior Center and Nursing home. The 7th grade sang winter songs all over the county at various businesses and partners in education venues. The 8th grade sang at Gwinett Medical Center Long Term Care Facility and the Mall of Georgia.
February was Disney World and All-State chorus! March was WIlly Wonka, JR., LGPE and folk song recording for our CD! We are in April and are hard at work preparing for our Spring Concert and honors night, recruiting tour and singing at the Encore Azalea Festival in Arcade. It has been a whirlwind of a year but we have made some beautiful music and had lots of fun!
